Weight Loss and Essential Oils

weight lossMany of us started the new year raring to go.  A long list of resolutions at the ready – determined to make 2012 our best year yet.

At the top of many of our lists of things to do this year was weight loss and/or getting back in shape.   Somehow by this time, many of those weight loss plans have stalled.  The business of our daily lives can get in the way of eating the way we know we should.

But don’t despair.  There are a few essential oils that can help you with your weight loss goals by

  • helping to melt fat
  • controlling cravings
  • reducing fluid retention
  • helping alleviate emotional stress

Essential oils are not a magic bullet to make the pounds just fall away.  But they are a wonderful and effective addition to your weight loss arsenal. Some of the more effective essential oils for weight loss are:

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint is an excellent aid to digestion.  It can help you lose weight by working on the part of the brain that triggers the feeling of being full when you eat.  Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a cotton ball or cloth or diffuse it and breathe in the vapors before your meals to reduce your appetite.  You can also add 1 or 2 drops of peppermint essential oil to a glass of water and drink it before your meals for the same effect.  As an added benefit, it tastes great and will give you a little extra energy.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit essential oil helps prevent water retention and bloating and can also help dissolve fat.  The limonene in grapefruit essential oil helps release fatty acids into the bloodstream where the body breaks them down and uses them for energy.  Like peppermint, grapefruit essential oil is a strong appetite suppressant.  Inhale the vapor of a few drops of grapefruit essential oil to ward off hunger pains or put a drop in an 8 ounce glass of water and drink it before meals.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot has strong sedative properties that make it an excellent essential oil for fighting stress and stress triggered eating.  If you pair it with lavender, it’s even more effective.   Put a couple of drops on a cloth and inhale the vapors to relax when you feel stressed and tempted to eat or dilute it by putting a drop in a teaspoon of honey or a 4 oz. glass of soy or almond milk and drinking it.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Like bergamot, sandalwood essential oil promotes a sense of well being and helps you control stress eating.  Long used in many cultures to promote emotional balance, sandalwood essential oil may help you overcome negative emotions and behavior.  When overcome those negative emotions, you no longer feel stressed and no longer feel tempted to eat to deal with stress.  You can use sandalwood essential oil for weight loss by diffusing it and inhaling the vapors, diluting it in a mixture of 1 drop sandalwood essential oil to 1 drop of carrier oil (like Young Living V6 massage oil or good extra virgin olive oil) and applying it to the Vita Flex Points on the feet or directly on the stomach or by diluting 1 drop in 1 teaspoon of honey or a 4 oz. glass of  soy or rice milk and drinking it.

Any of these essential oils may help you in your struggle to lose weight.  Of course, any weight loss plan that has a prayer for being effective has to include a sensible exercise program and proper nutrition.

These essential oils will give you that little extra something to help the other two pieces of the weight loss puzzle work by helping you break down fat, control your appetite and fight stress eating.
